Leadership coaching
Taking on a new leadership role can be both exciting and daunting at the same time. We are excited about the new challenge, the promotion and the fact that others believe we can do it, but it is not unusual for moments of self-doubt to creep in as we navigate the new situation.
Recognising the step change from team member to leader of the team, and the day-to-day requirements of your role is key to early success. What made you great in you last job is unlikely to guarantee success in your new leadership role. The critical skills of leadership have nothing much to do with how much of an expert you are in your field.
As a leader, you will have greater responsibility and are an important bridge between your own team and the rest of the organisation. Leadership can look like many different things to many people: It combines management strategy, people skills and vision. So, it is worth thinking about the existing qualities that you can leverage in your new leadership role, and identifying any gap(s) in your skills that you will need to be successful.
So what are the essential skills for any leader?
Well, there are many lists available of the essential skills which include: goal setting and planning, driving results, decision-making, communication, delegation, etc. However, it is often the important soft skills that new leaders overlook, or need to step-up to become more effective. For example, supporting, motivating and inspiring a team; working collaboratively with other areas of the business; handling conflict, and developing their own leadership style and executive presence in the organisation.
One-to-one personal coaching can support new leaders to understand their own leadership style and how it impacts on those around them. It is dedicated time to explore your what your existing leadership skills are, and to identify those essential skills that you need to develop further to be more effective in your role. It is tailor-made support to grow your own self-awareness, so that you can improve your performance. It is an investment in you.
